Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, DG Paramesh Sivamani, recently opened the Waterjet Production & Testing Facility from Marine Jet Power (MJP) India in Goa. This is a big step for India, aligning with the nation’s goal for self-reliance in maritime technology under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
With this facility, India joins the ranks of the U.S. and South Korea as the only countries with this specialized capability. Here’s how it will help:
- Local Supply Chain: This facility will create a domestic supply chain for waterjet propulsion systems.
- Indigenous Testing: It will support testing and validation right here in India.
- Less Reliance on Outsourcing: This development will reduce the need for foreign maintenance support.
- Regional Hub: It aims to become a hub for South Asia and nearby regions.
This initiative is expected to boost job creation and strengthen the ecosystem of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in marine engineering.
Currently, the Coast Guard uses over 100 Marine Jet Power waterjet systems and is set to add 42 more for its ships in development. This new facility is a game-changer. DG Sivamani emphasized that this comes from ongoing efforts started in 2023 to promote indigenization.
Additionally, during this visit, he checked on six indigenously built Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) at Chowgule & Company Pvt Ltd. This is India’s first project of its kind, with around 50% of its components sourced locally. The first ACV is set for delivery in May 2026.
