iciHaiti – Environment: Boosting Protection for Protected Areas
January 18, 2025
This week, a significant meeting took place between Jean François Thomas, the Director General of the National Agency for Protected Areas (ANAP), and Ulrick Bain, the Departmental Director of the West from the Ministry of the Environment. Their goal? To enhance teamwork for better environmental management in protected areas.
Key points discussed included:
- Finding new ways to tackle the rapid degradation of protected areas in the West.
- Coordinating actions for integrated management of these areas.
- Regularizing the Brigade for Surveillance of Protected Areas (BSAP), crucial for safeguarding these sensitive regions.
With the forest fire season approaching (January to August), they plan to implement joint efforts. This includes strategies for fire prevention, managing fuel loads, and conducting awareness campaigns to educate communities. Active fire control measures, like early detection and quick responses, will also be a priority.
Additionally, a new collaboration is forming among the Ministries of Justice, Environment, and Defense. They aim to sign an agreement to officially support the BSAP, which currently includes around 3,000 volunteer agents, according to the latest census from ANAP.
