The Illinois Department of Public Health is looking into a potential case of hantavirus in Winnebago County. This case isn’t linked to a recent outbreak on a cruise ship. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is conducting tests, which could take up to ten days for results.
The individual may have contracted the virus while cleaning a home with rodent droppings present. Dr. Alfredo Mena Lora, an infectious disease specialist, explained that exposure often occurs when cleaning areas contaminated by rodents, leading to the virus being aerosolized.
Fortunately, the patient is recovering from mild symptoms and did not need hospitalization. The hantavirus strain associated with this case isn’t easily spread from person to person, which reduces the risk of wider transmission.
In Illinois, the overall risk of getting hantavirus remains low. Orkin, a pest control company, advises using disinfectants on droppings before cleanup to prevent exposure. Shannon Sked, an entomologist at Orkin, emphasized the importance of safe handling of rodent droppings.
Since 1993, Illinois has recorded only seven positive hantavirus cases. On a national level, there have been about 890 cases since tracking began in 1993, highlighting the rarity of infections. The CDC states that despite some strains being transmittable among humans in South America, this is not a concern with the North American strain.
