IGN’s Leadership Change: What the Recent Mass Layoffs Mean for the Gaming Community

The head of IGN, the largest gaming site globally, is stepping down at the end of August. John Davison, who has been the publisher since 2019, shared with staff that it’s time for “the next chapter.” His exit follows significant layoffs that affected various departments.

Davison joined IGN just before the pandemic hit in 2020. During his time, he helped the site grow, launching events like IGN Live and a market analytics tool called Gaming Trends. Last year, IGN’s parent company, Ziff Davis, made headlines with the acquisition of the Gamer Network, which includes popular European sites such as Eurogamer and GameSpot. Unfortunately, this deal was also marred by layoffs, including for the notable site GamesIndustry.biz. Recently, Digital Foundry announced its independence from IGN.

With over 25 years in gaming media, including roles at EGM and Official PlayStation Magazine, Davison is departing during a challenging time for IGN. After previous editor-in-chief Tina Amini left in 2022, the company has faced cuts due to financial pressures. Amini’s position has not been filled, leaving uncertainty about the future.

Earlier this month, IGN laid off about 12% of its editorial team. The IGN Creators Guild expressed confusion over the layoffs, citing that the company experienced several quarters of revenue growth. They questioned why, despite success, jobs were still cut.

In his farewell message, Davison expressed gratitude to his team and pride in their achievements. He sounded optimistic about future opportunities.

Ziff Davis confirmed his departure and thanked him for his contributions. “We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” said Yael Prough, the president of gaming and entertainment at Ziff Davis.

This shake-up reflects a larger trend in the gaming industry, where many companies are tightening budgets despite previous successes. As gaming continues to grow, the challenges in maintaining a stable workforce become increasingly evident.
