In August, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) launched an exciting initiative to enhance research in defense and national security. Under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, the “Manekshaw Centre” aims to foster education, innovation, and collaboration in these crucial fields. Prof. Devendra Jalihal, the Director of IIT Guwahati, leads this effort.
A recent meeting included a high-level delegation that shared updates with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The team emphasized the importance of creating Nodal Centers at top institutions focused on defense research. Key members of the delegation included:

During the discussion, Minister Pradhan voiced strong support for the initiative, highlighting the necessity of collaborations among academia, defense sectors, and industries. This aligns perfectly with the Indian Government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) mission, aiming to create indigenous solutions for national defense challenges.
The idea for the Manekshaw Centre was driven by Lt. Gen. Saha and Prof. Sukumar Nandi, Dean of Administration at IIT Guwahati. Currently, the center includes prominent institutions like IITs from Guwahati, Kanpur, and Bombay, as well as IISc Bangalore. More institutions are expected to join this collaborative effort soon.
Launched in March 2025, the Manekshaw Centre for National Security Studies (MCoENSSR) aims to connect defense forces, security agencies, and academic institutions to strengthen national security. Its goals include:
- Establishing an ecosystem that supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, focusing on “winning India’s wars with Indian solutions.”
- Partnering with startups and foreign institutions to enhance technological readiness for the armed forces.
- Hosting workshops and conferences to address new security challenges and innovative technologies.
This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for innovation in national defense. As India faces emerging challenges like cybersecurity threats and asymmetric warfare, a strong synergy between academia and defense is vital. According to a recent report by the Ministry of Defense, India aims to increase its defense technology budget by 25% in the coming years, underscoring the urgency for specialized research and collaboration.
The Manekshaw Centre represents a crucial step toward harnessing academic resources for real-world defense applications, ensuring a safer and more secure India. This partnership could pave the way for groundbreaking solutions that keep pace with today’s rapid technological advancements.
