NEW DELHI: For the seventh consecutive year, IIT Madras has claimed the top spot in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for higher education in India. Announced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the India Rankings 2025 featured 14,163 universities competing across 17 categories.
IIT Madras not only held onto its title as the best engineering institute but also excelled in new areas this year, ranking first in both the Innovation Institutions and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) categories. In the Research category, it secured the second place, just behind the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru.
IISc Bengaluru has a notable year as well, being ranked the best university overall and second in research. The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru took the top spot for law colleges in the country.
Bengaluru shines further with the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, ranked as the second-best management institute and third for innovation. Another Karnataka institution, the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, is celebrated as the third best university in India.
In the overall ranking, IIT Bombay came in third. It also placed third in engineering, while achieving second in innovation. Meanwhile, IIM Ahmedabad continues to hold the top position in management education, and IIT Roorkee tops the Architecture and Planning category.
This ranking reflects a growing trend in Indian higher education, with institutions focusing more on innovation and sustainable practices. A recent survey showed that nearly 75% of students prioritize universities that emphasize these values. Experts believe this shift will shape the future landscape of education in India.
These rankings not only highlight academic excellence but also set a benchmark for aspiring institutions. The competition among universities drives improvements in education quality, research output, and societal impact, benefiting students and society at large.
