Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) Pravartak Technologies Foundation has teamed up with Sarvam AI, a company known for its innovative AI solutions. This partnership aims to create and implement AI technologies that cater to both industry and government needs in India.
This collaboration represents an important step toward making India more self-reliant in technology. Recently, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between IITM Pravartak and Sarvam AI, marking the start of this venture.
As India pushes forward with its national AI initiatives, there’s a growing need for AI systems that can handle Indian languages and contexts. Sarvam AI specializes in developing multilingual AI solutions, powered by infrastructure designed specifically for India.
Their expertise includes creating foundational models for AI, including those for conversational and speech technologies that are culturally relevant to India. In support of this, IITM Pravartak brings its engineering skills and deep knowledge of AI systems, making it well-suited for real-world applications.
Together, the two organizations plan to develop comprehensive AI applications for various sectors, including healthcare, defense, finance, and public administration. They aim to empower government and businesses to harness the full potential of AI designed with Indian data and languages in mind.
M. J. Shankar Raman, CEO of IITM Pravartak, commented, “This partnership helps us enhance our AI capabilities. We combine our research strengths with Sarvam AI’s secure infrastructure to create tailored AI solutions for critical sectors. Our goal is to ensure data sovereignty and support India’s digital progress.”
Similarly, Pratyush Kumar, Co-Founder of Sarvam AI, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. He noted, “We aim to build AI solutions that are not only advanced but also deeply rooted in Indian context, ensuring they can make a significant impact.”
Historically, India has faced challenges in adopting technologies that understand its diverse languages and cultures. This partnership aims to bridge that gap, leveraging local expertise and infrastructure to advance AI capability across the nation.
Moreover, recent surveys indicate that AI adoption among Indian enterprises is on the rise, with nearly 60% of businesses planning to invest in AI technologies in the next year. This trend underscores the timely nature of the IITM Pravartak and Sarvam AI collaboration.
With the foundation laid by this MoU, both organizations are set to play a key role in India’s goal of becoming a digitally empowered nation.
