Climate Action Ilkley (CAI) has shared its thoughts on Bradford Council’s draft Climate Action Plan for 2025-2028. This is part of a wider consultation, aimed at moving Bradford closer to its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2038, with substantial achievements expected by 2030.
While CAI appreciates the Council’s efforts, they believe the plan could be stronger. Currently, it lacks measurable targets and overlooks some significant greenhouse gas sources, like air travel and dietary choices.
Mark Stidworthy, Chair of Trustees at CAI, emphasized the urgency of the matter. He noted how recent heatwaves serve as a clear signal that climate change is affecting local areas like Ilkley and Bradford. “We need to reduce carbon emissions quickly and prepare for the challenges posed by rising CO2 levels,” he said.
Stidworthy also praised Bradford Council for outlining its ambitions in the plan. He expressed hope for collaboration in enhancing it, especially in establishing clearer emissions reduction targets and local strategies for adapting to climate change.
He pointed to successful local initiatives, such as the Ilkley Thingery and the Active Travel Hub, as models that could benefit the entire district. “We’re ready to share our experiences with the Council,” Stidworthy mentioned.
Public engagement is vital. Stidworthy encourages everyone to read the draft plan and share their opinions during the consultation. The full response from CAI is available on their website at climateactionilkley.org.uk.
According to recent data from the UK Climate Change Committee, local councils play a critical role in reaching national climate goals. As communities recognize the stakes, the push for effective action grows stronger. This is an opportunity for citizens to influence how their local area responds to the climate crisis.
