The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) recently revealed that names and addresses of thousands of patients were mistakenly made public for several years. This error stemmed from incorrect privacy settings on maps used by the agency to inform decisions about office locations and resource allocation.
From April 2021 to September 2025, over 32,000 clients from the Division of Rehabilitation Services had their personal details, such as names, addresses, case numbers, and case statuses, exposed. Additionally, around 670,000 recipients of Medicaid and Medicare Savings Programs also had sensitive information accessible online during a portion of that time.
On September 22, IDHS identified the problem and took immediate action to enhance privacy settings, ensuring that only authorized employees could access the sensitive maps. The agency has also put in place a secure map policy to prevent any similar issues in the future.
Interestingly, experts emphasize that data protection is crucial in today’s digital age. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, about 81% of Americans feel they have little or no control over their personal information online. Missteps like the IDHS incident highlight the importance of robust privacy measures.
While IDHS reported no known cases of misuse of the exposed data, individuals affected will receive notifications with resources for further questions.
