The Illinois Extension in Edwards, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, and Wayne counties recently wrapped up the 2025-2026 deer hunting season with a celebration of the Hunters Feeding Illinois initiative. This year, over 2,600 pounds of venison were donated to local food pantries, making a significant impact on food security in these communities.
Hunters Feeding Illinois allows hunters who legally harvest deer to donate their game. The deer are processed and the meat, primarily ground venison, is distributed to food banks. This initiative is a collaboration that includes local hunters, meat processors, and community donors.
“It’s all about connections,” said Alizah Harper, a SNAP-Ed Educator leading the program. “Hunters are eager to help, local donors cover processing costs, and food pantries need nutritious protein. Bringing these groups together meets vital needs in our communities.”
In total, Charlie’s Deer Processing in Bridgeport and Legacy Meats in Sumner processed 83 donated deer this season. Generous contributions from the community covered processing fees. The result was 2,698 pounds of ground venison, which translates to approximately 10,792 servings. This meat was delivered to five food pantries in Lawrence, Richland, and Wabash counties. The Illinois Extension also supported pantry patrons with cookbooks and kitchen tools, making it easier to prepare the venison.
According to recent surveys, food insecurity is a growing concern across many communities in the U.S. The USDA reported that as of 2021, nearly 10.5% of households faced food insecurity. Programs like Hunters Feeding Illinois play a crucial role in addressing this issue locally, providing not just food, but also valuable education and resources.
County Extension Director Tara Buerster emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Hunters Feeding Illinois showcases how collaboration can turn a successful hunting season into nutritious meals for families in need.”
