The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) recently joined forces to enhance environmental conservation. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on April 13, 2026, at UNILORIN’s campus in Kwara State.
This collaboration will create a five-hectare Conservation Park at the university. The park aims to engage students in conservation efforts, register them as NCF members, and support joint research projects. One exciting initiative is assessing the carbon in the university’s forests.
Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILORIN, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. He noted that this initiative highlights their commitment to sustainability and conservation, which he sees as crucial for both the campus and the wider community.
Dr. Joseph Onoja, the Director-General of NCF, praised UNILORIN’s proactive steps. He believes the conservation park will not only aid their advocacy but also serve as a hands-on learning environment for students studying forest management.
Another point to consider is how conservation practices have evolved. Historically, environmental efforts were often limited to awareness campaigns. Today, interactive projects like this park reflect a shift towards practical solutions, making students active participants in sustainability.
Recent surveys reveal that young people are increasingly concerned about environmental issues. Ninety percent of Gen Z respondents in a 2023 study expressed a desire for more educational programs on sustainability in schools. This MoU comes at a perfect time, aligning educational efforts with the growing demand for environmental action.
Partnerships like the one between UNILORIN and NCF show how educational institutions can play a pivotal role in fostering a sustainable future.
