On April 3, 2025, the Imo State House of Assembly took an important step to tackle flooding issues. During a meeting, the Assembly called on government agencies to act quickly to keep waterways clear and to ensure that floodwaters can flow freely during the rainy season.

This motion came from Mr. Kingsley Ozurumba, a representative from Isu. He pointed out that climate change has created serious weather problems around the world, including in Imo State. The depletion of the ozone layer can lead to floods and other extreme weather events, causing significant damage and loss of life.

Ozurumba highlighted that the state government has already put in place some flood management tools, like balloon technology in Owerri. These efforts are crucial, but he warned that they can only be effective if residents practice responsible waste disposal and keep waterways clear.

Supporting this initiative, Mr. Sam Osuji praised the governor’s efforts to improve the drainage system, calling it “second to none.” He echoed the need for public awareness and suggested that educating the community could prevent flood-related challenges.

Mr. Kanayo Onyemaechi also backed the motion, noting that the balloon drainage system has helped reduce flooding in the area. He emphasized that improper waste disposal significantly contributes to the flooding issue.

As discussions progressed, the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Amarachi Iwuanyanwu, approved the motion and instructed the Clerk to inform the necessary agencies of the Assembly’s resolution.

Recent data shows that cities worldwide are increasingly affected by flooding due to climate change. A 2023 report from the United Nations found that urban flood risks are expected to rise, affecting millions. This underscores the importance of proactive measures like those being discussed in Imo State.
