Impact of Higgins’ Concussion: What the Bengals Face Without Their Star WR Against the Ravens

CINCINNATI — Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins will miss Sunday’s game against the Ravens. This marks his second absence this season due to concussion protocol.

Higgins also sat out the first matchup against Baltimore, where the Bengals won 32-14. He had been somewhat active in practice earlier this week but did not appear on Friday when the media was allowed.

His injury troubles began on November 23 against the New England Patriots. While attempting to catch a pass, he fell hard and had to be carted off the field. He missed the following game against the Ravens just four days later.

On December 7, during a game against the Buffalo Bills, Higgins hit the ground hard yet again. Though he managed to pass concussion checks at the time, he experienced symptoms later and was placed back in the protocol.

Higgins is known for his dedication. “I’m a team-first guy,” he mentioned after the Bills game. Despite the risks, he played well, recording six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. However, his decision led to ongoing concerns for his health.

With Higgins out, wide receiver Mitch Tinsley will likely step up. In the last game against Baltimore, Tinsley was on the field for 67% of offensive plays. Though he had limited success with just two catches on nine targets in that game, he is eager for a second chance. “I’d love to get more opportunities. Whatever chances I get, I need to make them count,” he said.

In other injury updates, rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart is also sidelined. He’s recovering from a torn ligament in his left knee and remains on injured reserve.

In the context of player safety, recent NFL statistics show that concussions in the league have been a growing concern, with nearly 300 reported last season. This is prompting discussions on better protocols and player education regarding head injuries.

It’s crucial for players like Higgins and Tinsley to stay healthy and focused as they head into critical games. As fans, we can only hope for their speedy recovery and bright performances ahead.
