Impact of Trump’s Education Department Decision: DEI Measures Scrapped and Staff Suspended – What It Means for Our Schools

In a swift move following President Donald Trump’s recent executive order, the U.S. Department of Education announced plans to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This order targets DEI measures across the federal workforce.

Officials revealed that over 200 webpages, which provided DEI resources for schools and colleges, will soon be taken offline. They also put employees who were leading these DEI programs on paid administrative leave, although the exact number of affected staff has not been disclosed.

Alongside these changes, the department has canceled substantial contracts that were related to DEI training and services. Two internal groups aimed at promoting diversity within the agency have also been dissolved.

In a related shift, nearly a dozen new political appointees have been introduced for top positions within the department. Most of these individuals come from the America First Policy Institute, an organization aligned with Trump’s policies, led by Linda McMahon, who has been nominated for the role of Education Secretary. However, some key positions, like the one overseeing U.S. colleges, remain vacant.

Meanwhile, the Senate committee responsible for education has not yet announced when McMahon’s confirmation hearing will take place. This delay is partly due to a prolonged review by the Office of Government Ethics regarding her disclosures.

On the leadership front, Denise Carter, who previously led the Education Department’s Federal Student Aid office under the Biden administration, has been appointed as the acting secretary.
