Microsoft has officially announced that Skype will close down on May 5. This news isn’t entirely surprising. A recent find in a Skype for Windows preview hinted at the shutdown and encouraged users to switch to Teams instead.
Skype began in 2003, created by a group of developers in Europe. Over time, it gained popularity and was bought by Microsoft in 2011. Each user has a unique ID, and the service connects with phone networks worldwide. However, after a major redesign in 2017, users were divided between fans of the old look and those who preferred the new one.
With many users leaving and Teams gaining traction, it seems Skype’s time has come. For the few remaining Skype users, the choices are clear: download your data before it’s gone or switch your account to Teams.
