In Vancouver, Canada Post is changing how it delivers mail. The government-owned corporation plans to shift about 136,000 addresses from home delivery to community mailboxes. This change will affect around 4 million homes over the next five years.
Jon Hamilton, a spokesperson for Canada Post, explained that the transition will take six to nine months for each community. They are working with local planners to find the best spots for these mailboxes. Interestingly, about 75% of the 17.6 million addresses already use some form of centralized delivery, like community boxes or post office boxes.
This move is expected to save Canada Post about CDN $400 million (around US $292 million) each year. The corporation has been facing significant financial challenges, reporting losses of CDN $1 billion (around US $730 million) in just the first nine months of 2025. Despite these changes, Hamilton assured that no workers will be laid off; they will be reassigned. Currently, Canada Post employs around 60,000 people.
The discussions to end home delivery come amid ongoing negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Union members have been without a contract since November 2023 and have organized strikes during negotiations.
Community reactions have varied. For instance, Liane Beadon, a 44-year-old resident of North Vancouver, isn’t bothered by the change. She believes it’s a smart decision to keep costs down while maintaining mail services.
These shifts in Canada Post’s delivery method highlight a broader trend in the postal service industry. Many countries are moving towards centralized delivery systems as a way to manage costs and enhance efficiency. In the U.S., for example, the United States Postal Service has also been exploring similar strategies in response to financial pressures.
