Important Health Alert: Tetra Turtle Food Recall in Hawaiʻi Due to Salmonella Risk – What You Need to Know!

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health has issued a recall for Spectrum Brands’ ReptoMin 3-In-1 SELECT-A-FOOD, which is designed for aquatic turtles. This recall is due to possible salmonella contamination.

This specific product, packaged in a 1.56-ounce container with a green label, was sold at Walmart stores in Hawai‘i and online via Chewy and Amazon. The lot code affected is 951790, and the Universal Product Code (UPC) is 0 46798 78626 9. Other lots aren’t impacted, and stores are following up to ensure the recalled product is off the shelves.

While aquatic turtles usually don’t show signs of salmonella, they can still carry the bacteria without appearing sick. If your turtle has consumed the recalled food and shows symptoms—like lethargy, diarrhea, or loss of appetite—consult your vet.

People can also get salmonella from handling contaminated food or coming into contact with pets that ate it. Common symptoms in humans include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Usually, people recover without needing treatment, but severe cases can lead to hospitalization.

Reports suggest that children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for serious illness. To stay safe, wash your hands thoroughly after handling pets or their food and clean any surfaces that might have come into contact with the contaminated product.

So far, there have been no reported illnesses linked to the recalled food. If you’ve bought this product, check the UPC and lot code. If it matches, dispose of it safely to keep children and pets away. Use gloves when handling the product and clean surfaces well afterward.

Customers can get a full refund by returning the product to the point of purchase. For more information, you can contact Spectrum Brands at 1-800-586-0650 or via email at aquaticssupport@spectrumbrands.com.

The recall highlights the importance of food safety, especially for pet owners. Awareness and simple precautions can go a long way in preventing health issues related to contamination. For further reading on food safety guidelines, you can visit the CDC’s Salmonella Prevention page.
