Attention Pedestrians and Cyclists: Please note the following important information.
On February 4, 2025, the City of Vancouver announced the closure of the seawall path between Creekside Community Centre and Science World. This decision comes after concerns from a structural assessment of the Expo Deck, which supports this section of the pathway. The closure is effective immediately and will remain until further notice while the city evaluates the structure’s safety.
Detour Information
While the path is closed, here’s how you can detour:
Pedestrians and cyclists will need to divert south of Science World:
- Pedestrians can use existing sidewalks.
- Cyclists are suggested to take the bike lane on Ontario Street, use the pedestrian path toward Switchmen Street, and ride in the curbside lane on Quebec. Please be mindful and slow down or dismount on the pedestrian path between Ontario and Switchmen.
These detours are in place while the City assesses the Expo Deck structure. The City is also looking into other detour options that might be closer to the existing paths.
Access to Local Areas
- Science World remains accessible. An attendant is available to help visitors from the south parking lot.
- A section of the north deck between Science World and the Creekside Park Playground is also closed, but access to the Seawall and Seaside Greenway path north of Science World remains open.
- Access to the dinghy dock south of Science World is currently closed.

About the Expo Decks
The Expo Deck structures were originally built for the 1986 World Expo and were intended for temporary use. Experts have noted that they are reaching the end of their useful life.
In 2024, the City hired a consultant to evaluate the next steps for these structures, which includes addressing necessary repairs and modifications, and rerouting pedestrian and cyclist pathways affected by upcoming deconstruction. Planning for this work is ongoing, with deconstruction scheduled for 2028-2032. In the meantime, the City will continue to monitor the deck’s condition for public safety.
