Important Recall: Tamales Pulled from Shelves Due to Undeclared Allergen – What You Need to Know!

La Guadalupana Foods LLC, based in Chicago, Illinois, is recalling over 2,600 pounds of frozen tamales due to mislabeling and an undeclared allergen, as highlighted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The affected tamales, which contain beans, cheese, and jalapenos, were incorrectly labeled as mild pork tamales. This is a serious issue since the product includes cheese, a known allergen that is not mentioned on the label. For individuals with milk allergies, consuming these tamales could lead to severe reactions.

There is a particular concern regarding the product’s long shelf life, which extends to October 8, 2026. This means that some of these tamales might still be found in homes or restaurants across Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

  • The recalled product comes in 10.9-pound plastic-lined boxes containing 50 tamales. They are labeled as “La Guadalupana MILD PORK TAMALES Wrapped in Corn Husks,” with a pack date of October 7, 2025.

These tamales are marked with “EST. 21094” inside the USDA inspection stamp. The issue came to light when a restaurant informed La Guadalupana about the mislabeled items.

Although there have been no reported allergic reactions, anyone who has consumed these products and is worried about their health should seek advice from a healthcare professional. This incident highlights the importance of accurate food labeling to ensure consumer safety.

According to a 2021 survey by the Food Allergy Research & Education organization, nearly 32 million Americans have food allergies, making mislabeling a critical public health concern. The findings emphasize the need for food manufacturers to maintain rigorous labeling standards to protect vulnerable populations.

In recent years, food recalls have become more common, with consumers increasingly relying on social media to share their experiences. Reactions on platforms like Twitter and Facebook during recalls often mix concern and frustration, showcasing the need for effective communication from food companies during such incidents. It’s clear that both consumers and producers must be vigilant regarding food safety.
