Plex has recently alerted users about a data breach that may affect their accounts. Hackers accessed a database and stole some customer information, including email addresses, usernames, and hashed passwords.

In their notification, Plex stated that “an unauthorized third party accessed a limited subset of customer data.” They assured users that passwords were securely encrypted, so they couldn’t be easily read. However, Plex did not disclose the specific hashing method, raising some concerns among security experts about the potential for those passwords to be cracked.

To protect yourself, Plex advises resetting your password at plex.tv/reset. Make sure to choose the option that signs you out of all connected devices, which will log you out everywhere and require a new login.

If you use Single Sign-On (SSO) to log in, visit plex.tv/security and sign out of all active sessions to ensure your account’s safety.

Plex emphasizes the importance of enabling two-factor authentication for added security. They also remind users that support staff will never ask for personal information like passwords or credit card details via email.

Fortunately, no credit card data was compromised, as Plex doesn’t store payment information on their servers. While Plex claims they have resolved the breach’s vulnerabilities, they haven’t shared technical specifics about how the attack occurred.

This isn’t the first time Plex users have faced a similar situation. Back in August 2022, a nearly identical breach occurred, leading users to reset their passwords due to compromised authentication data.

Interestingly, recent studies highlight a troubling trend in data security. According to the Picus Blue Report 2025, 46% of environments had passwords cracked this year, nearly double from just 25% last year. This underscores the growing importance of robust password practices and security measures.
