Indian Railways Enhances Passenger Safety
New Rules on Passenger Access: The Indian Railways is tightening rules to improve safety at busy train stations. Starting soon, only passengers with confirmed tickets will be allowed on the platforms at 60 major stations, such as Bengaluru and New Delhi. This change aims to reduce overcrowding and enhance the overall travel experience.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared these updates after discussions with railway officials. The focus is on crowd management at stations that typically see high volumes of travelers.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Passengers with confirmed tickets will have direct access to platforms.
- Those with no ticket or a waiting list ticket must stay in outside waiting areas.
- All unauthorized entry points will be sealed to control access.
- Crowds will be managed so that passengers can only enter the platforms as trains arrive.
Past successes during peak travel times, like the 2024 festival season, showed that these waiting areas can effectively hold large crowds until their trains are ready.
Additionally, new security measures will include installing many cameras at these stations to monitor crowd situations closely. A centralized command center, or “war room,” will help manage operations and responses during peak periods.
The major stations included in this new rule are expected to be the New Delhi Railway Station, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai, Howrah Junction in Kolkata, Chennai Central, and Bengaluru City Railway Station.
