Update from NASA Goddard
On June 12, 2025, an email was sent to NASA Goddard employees sharing some exciting news. Gavin Schmidt, director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, received the prestigious Planetary Health Award from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. This award recognizes his significant contributions to understanding climate change and its effects on our planet. His team’s work has been key in studying atmospheric systems, making a real impact in the field.
Acting Administrator Janet Petro also announced that NASA is undergoing changes to align with new budget priorities. To help with this transition, NASA is offering voluntary separation programs to its employees. The options include Deferred Resignation Program (DRP), Voluntary Early Retirement Authority (VERA), and Voluntary Separation Incentive Program (VSIP). Employees have until July 25 to apply, so it’s a good time for personal discussions about how these changes fit into individual plans.
The agency is also reviewing changes in operations, some of which will be immediate. For instance, the contract with the Veo scooter service will end on June 16, and these scooters will be phased out. NASA is looking into transportation alternatives, and further updates will be shared.
A town hall meeting is scheduled for June 16 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Hinners Auditorium. It will also be streamed online. This is a great opportunity for employees to ask questions about the recent changes and initiatives.
Additionally, the legal office at Goddard is offering training sessions for employees considering jobs outside of the agency. These sessions will provide useful information, especially for scientists. Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. have also created resources for federal workers transitioning out of service, providing essential support during this period.
Stay tuned for more updates and join us at the town hall!
Best,
Dr. Makenzie Lystrup
Center Director
