Imprisoned Landlord Dies After Serving Decades for Hate Crime Against Palestinian American Family

JOLIET, Ill. — Joseph Czuba, the landlord who was sentenced to 53 years in prison for killing 6-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi and injuring his mother, has died in custody. Czuba was 73 years old and had been convicted of murder, attempted murder, and committing a hate crime.

This tragic event occurred in October 2023, shortly after the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. Czuba attacked the family because of their Islamic faith. During the trial, emotional evidence was presented, including Wadee’s mother, Hanan Shaheen, recounting the harrowing details of the attack. She described how Czuba had demanded they leave his property due to their religion.

Experts believe this incident reflects ongoing tensions in America regarding discrimination against Muslims. Ahmed Rehab, from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, emphasized that while Czuba may be gone, the hate that fueled his actions remains a serious issue.
