India Aims for 60% Rise in Rice Exports: Highlights from the Bharat International Rice Conference 2025

Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) President Prem Garg recently announced plans to boost India’s rice export share from 40% to 60% during the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) in New Delhi. He highlighted that this year, India not only leads in rice exports but is also the top producer, surpassing China. Garg emphasized that increasing exports would significantly benefit farmers.

The BIRC has attracted farmers from about 21 states, around 55 diplomats, and thousands of exporters and startups. This gathering marks a novel initiative by the IREF, showcasing live rice processing plants and drawing a crowd of 3,000 to 4,000 attendees from across India. Garg noted the overwhelming response, which exceeded all expectations.

Discussing the impact of US tariffs, Garg remained optimistic, stating that they would have little effect. The US only imports about 270,000 tonnes of rice, whereas India has opened up a new market with a potential of two million tonnes this year, suggesting that new opportunities outweigh challenges.

Garg also addressed key issues for the rice industry, urging the government to ban pesticides and improve logistics and port facilities. He argued that apart from these requests, the rice sector is largely self-sufficient.

The BIRC has gathered delegates from over 80 countries, including major rice importers, exporters, scientists, and policymakers. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen the international rice trade and promote sustainable practices in the industry.

As more countries seek food security through stable rice supplies, India’s role as a leader in rice production and export becomes increasingly vital. According to recent data from the Food and Agriculture Organization, global rice consumption is projected to rise in the coming years, creating further opportunities for Indian exporters. Engaging with various stakeholders can help elevate India’s position in the global rice market while ensuring sustainable practices for future generations.
