India and France Strengthen Ties through Joint Military Exercises: A Look at Their Strategic Collaboration

New Delhi: Indian and French military forces recently conducted a two-week wargame in France aimed at enhancing their readiness for various security challenges. This exercise, known as Shakti, took place from June 18 to July 1 and involved around 50 armored and tactical vehicles, as well as fighter jets.

About 500 members of the French military took part, including troops from the Foreign Legion, the Air and Space Force, and the Navy. The Indian team consisted of 90 personnel, mainly from the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, along with other units.

The joint drills occurred in Aveyron and Herault, providing both militaries a valuable chance to improve their operational skills for complex combat situations, especially in sub-conventional settings.

According to a statement from the French embassy, “This exercise served as an effective platform for sharing best practices in tactics and procedures, strengthening cooperation and respect between our armed forces.” Such activities are crucial for reinforcing the Indo-French defense partnership.

One point of interest is the involvement of the French Foreign Legion, which has a rich history dating back to 1831. Known for its rigorous selection process, it allows foreigners to serve in the French Army and has participated in all significant operations led by France.

Indo-French military exercises, including Exercise Garuda and Exercise Varuna, have been steadily increasing in complexity and frequency. This growth reflects both countries’ commitment to maintaining peace and enhancing global security.

A recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute noted that defense collaborations like these are becoming essential as nations confront evolving threats. The shared experiences gained through exercises like Shakti contribute to better preparedness for both countries.
