India’s Defence Ministry has finalized a significant contract worth ₹4,666 crore. This deal includes more than 425,000 close-quarter battle (CQB) carbines and 48 heavyweight torpedoes. Let’s explore what this means for India’s military.
Carbines Purchase
A large portion of the budget, ₹2,770 crore, will go toward the CQB carbines. These will be produced by two Indian companies: Bharat Forge Limited and PLR Systems. Bharat Forge will handle 60% of the production, while PLR Systems will cover the remaining 40%. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh led the signing of these contracts, indicating a strong push for homegrown defense solutions.
The goal is to enhance the combat capabilities of Indian forces. The new carbines feature advanced technology intended to replace outdated models. According to the Ministry, the design of these carbines allows for high rates of fire in tight spaces. This focus on innovation is part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, aimed at making India more self-reliant in defense manufacturing.
Torpedo Acquisition
In addition to carbines, there’s also a ₹1,896 crore agreement for 48 ‘Black Shark’ heavyweight torpedoes. These will be installed in India’s Kalvari-class submarines, which are built in collaboration with a French company. The first submarine, INS Kalvari, was commissioned in December 2017, with plans for the last one to enter service in early 2025.
The torpedoes deliver advanced operational capabilities. Their integration is expected to significantly boost the effectiveness of these submarines. Deliveries are expected to start in April 2028 and finish by early 2030.
