India Box Office Success: ‘Deva’ Surpasses $5 Million in Just One Week!

Shahid Kapoor’s latest film, Deva, had a modest start at the box office but gained momentum, ending its first week with $5.4 million globally. Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, this thriller sees Kapoor taking on the role of a police officer in a story designed to captivate audiences.

The film also features notable actors such as Pooja Hegde, Kubbra Sait, and Upendra Limaye. Though it marks Andrrews’ first Hindi film, he is known for directing titles like Notebook and How Old Are You? Deva hit theaters on January 31 and was released across roughly 2,200 screens in India.

Upon its release, Deva managed to earn around $770,000 on its opening Friday, with a worldwide total of approximately $1.1 million. However, the film significantly improved its box office performance by the next day, doubling its figures to earn a global total of $2.5 million by Saturday. By the end of its first weekend, Deva had grossed about $3.8 million.

After seven days, the film crossed the $5 million mark globally, with $3.7 million coming from India alone. Despite these numbers, the film’s earnings may decline in the coming weeks.

Interestingly, Deva appears to be a reimagining of Andrrews’ own 2013 Malayalam film, Mumbai Police. Both films revolve around a lead cop who suffers memory loss just before cracking a case, leading to a suspenseful narrative filled with twists. While the Hindi version offers thrilling action and showcases Kapoor’s range—shifting from a bold cop to a more thoughtful character—some parts feel forced to cater to mainstream audiences, disrupting the narrative flow.

Although Shahid Kapoor shines in his role, Deva falls short of being a standout film. The script lacks coherence at times, even though Kapoor’s performances are compelling and will satisfy fans who appreciate his talent.

In terms of competition, Deva faced another release, the romantic comedy Loveyapa, which debuted alongside it. Directed by Advait Chauhan, Loveyapa features Khushi Kapoor and Junaid Khan, both making their theatrical debuts. This adds an extra layer of interest as viewers anticipate their performances alongside Kapoor’s seasoned presence.
