On January 13, 2025, India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner, Md. Nural Islam. This move came after Bangladesh’s interim government expressed serious concerns about tensions along the border between the two countries.

The situation at the India-Bangladesh border has gained attention since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, 2024. Reports have surfaced of former members of Hasina’s Awami League party and other Bangladeshi citizens attempting to cross into India in various areas along the border.
One notable incident occurred in late August 2024 when the body of Awami League leader Ishfaq Ali Khan Panna was discovered near Meghalaya, close to the border. His death raised suspicions that he may have been pursued and killed by political adversaries.
During a meeting, Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Md. Jashim Uddin, communicated these concerns to Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma. This discussion followed comments from Jehangir Alam Chowdhury, an adviser on home affairs in Bangladesh, who claimed that India had begun building fences in five locations along the border without prior consultation with Bangladeshi authorities. This prompted the summoning of the Indian envoy to address the matter.
The ongoing developments at the border highlight the complexities in India-Bangladesh relations, especially in light of recent political upheavals in Bangladesh.
