India has taken a significant step in aerospace manufacturing. The first Airbus C295 military aircraft has been assembled domestically at the Tata-Airbus facility in Vadodara. This marks a crucial milestone for India’s ambition to boost its local manufacturing capabilities.
Currently, the aircraft is gearing up for flight testing before it is delivered to the Indian Air Force. Recently, Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, the Deputy Chief of Air Staff, visited the assembly line to check on advancements in the program. This effort blends Airbus technology with Tata Advanced Systems Limited’s local expertise.
Back in 2021, India signed a contract to procure 56 C295 aircraft. This deal aims to replace the outdated HS 748 Avro fleet currently in service. Under this agreement, 16 planes will come directly from Airbus’s facility in Seville, while the remaining 40 will be assembled in India, supporting the government’s “Make in India” initiative.
The Vadodara plant, inaugurated in October 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, will handle not just assembly but also systems integration and long-term support. With this order, India has become the largest customer for the C295 program.
The C295 is designed for various tactical missions, including troop transport and medical evacuations. Its ability to operate from short runways makes it particularly useful for missions in remote areas.
Moreover, the Indian-made C295s will feature locally developed electronic warfare systems from companies like Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics. This development is part of broader efforts to involve many Indian suppliers and locally produce thousands of components, thereby reducing reliance on foreign military imports.
In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on boosting India’s defense manufacturing. According to a report by the Confederation of Indian Industry, the defense sector is expected to grow by 16% annually, driven by initiatives like “Make in India.” Social media discussions have highlighted public pride in these domestic advancements, showing a newfound enthusiasm for local production.
The C295 program not only strengthens national defense but also aims to create local jobs and foster technological growth. As India continues to expand its aerospace capabilities, it presents an exciting future for both the economy and national security.
