On a recent visit to the Maldives, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a $565 million aid package to strengthen the country’s defense and infrastructure. This visit marked his first since winning a third term, emphasizing India’s commitment to be the Maldives’ “first responder.”

Modi highlighted the shared goals of peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region, underlining India’s role in supporting the Maldives, which has around 525,000 residents.

Muizzu has noted that India’s support through essential goods is vital for the Maldives, reflecting the deepening bilateral cooperation. Modi plans to leave the Maldives after attending the 60th Independence Day celebrations in the capital, Male.

The geopolitical landscape has shifted, with Maldives historically aligned closely with India. However, rising Chinese influence poses challenges. For instance, China is also a major lender to the Maldives, further complicating the delicate balance between the two powers.

According to recent statistics, about 40% of the Maldives’ GDP comes from tourism, making its economy vulnerable to external influences. The strategic location of the Maldives, with vital shipping lanes passing through, makes it crucial for both India and China in the Indian Ocean region.

As countries navigate these dynamics, the Maldives stands at a crossroads. The island nation must balance its development needs with the pressures of international relations, all while ensuring a secure future for its people.
