India Considers Reducing Duties on Select U.S. Imports Following Trump’s Tariff Announcement

New Delhi: India is considering lowering tariffs on some high-end US products, including a unique type of steel, luxury motorcycles, and electronics, according to sources. This decision, expected to be confirmed when Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents the budget on Saturday, likely won’t have a significant impact on domestic industries. Currently, India imposes over 100% duty on 20 items imported from the US.

The talks come after US President Donald Trump criticized India, China, and Brazil for their high tariffs. Speaking to House Republicans, he vowed to prioritize American interests, saying, “… we’re not going to let that happen any longer… we’re going to put America first.”

Trump emphasized that he would impose tariffs on countries he sees as harming US trade, labeling China as the biggest offender. He has previously pushed for reciprocal trade policies, stating that if countries charge high duties, the US would respond similarly.

These remarks came just before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the US, following earlier comments made by Trump regarding high tariffs on goods from BRICS nations, which he claimed were being unfairly exploited in trade.

Historically, Trump’s administration has used tariffs as a tool to boost American manufacturing by increasing the costs of essential goods like steel and electronics, hoping this would bring jobs back to the US. However, there is considerable debate about whether this approach is effective or sustainable in the long term.

Trump’s approach to economic policy highlights a theme of using tariffs strategically to negotiate better trade terms with other nations while protecting American interests.
