India Enhances Defense Power with Induction of Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System

India has made a significant move toward being self-reliant in defense with the introduction of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) into its military. This new artillery piece, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) alongside Tata Advanced Systems Ltd and Bharat Forge Ltd, is set to enhance the firepower of the Indian Army.

The army plans to acquire 307 units of the ATAGS as part of its strategy to modernize its artillery forces. This 155mm, 52-caliber artillery gun stands out for its impressive range of over 40 kilometers and its innovative electric drive system. This technology not only requires less maintenance but also assures long-term operational reliability.

Designed for autonomy, the ATAGS integrates with the Artillery Shakti system, allowing it to coordinate firepower across large areas efficiently. It can utilize various types of ammunition, including precision-guided shells, which adds to its versatility. The ATAGS can fire at a rate of five rounds per minute, sustaining 60 rounds an hour—a formidable capability that greatly boosts the army’s effectiveness.

First revealed at India’s Republic Day Parade in 2017, the ATAGS had a historic moment during the 75th Independence Day celebrations, becoming the first indigenous artillery gun to perform a ceremonial salute. More than just a technological marvel, the ATAGS represents a significant achievement in India’s "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiative, boasting over 80% local content.
