India Expands Defense Capabilities: $805 Million Order for 300 Local 155mm Towed Guns

The Indian Ministry of Defence recently made a significant move to boost its military capabilities. It awarded a hefty contract worth 69 billion Indian rupees, roughly $805 million, to two local firms. This is the largest defense deal in India’s history for domestic suppliers, aimed at modernizing the country’s artillery systems.

Bharat Forge Limited and Tata Advanced Systems Limited will share the contract. Bharat Forge will supply 184 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS), receiving 60% of the deal, while Tata will provide the remaining 123 guns. The contract also includes heavy-duty towing vehicles for the artillery.

The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System is a remarkable advancement. Developed by the government’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), it boasts several cutting-edge features. It can hit targets over 40 kilometers away and is designed for precision with advanced fire control and automated loading systems.
