India Launches Bharat Forecasting System: Discover the World’s Most Accurate Weather Model with 6-Km Resolution!

The Indian government is set to launch the Bharat Forecasting System (BFS) on Monday. This new system aims to provide highly accurate and localized weather predictions.

Developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune, the BFS boasts a groundbreaking 6-kilometer resolution. This is the finest level of detail available worldwide, allowing forecasters to track small-scale weather changes more effectively.

M. Ravichandran, the Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, highlighted that this advancement means better, more localized weather information for everyone. "We will now be able to issue more accurate forecasts," he told PTI.

One of the key upgrades that made this system possible is the installation of a new supercomputer named Arka. It can process data at an impressive capacity of 11.77 petaflops and has a storage capacity of 33 petabytes. To put that into perspective, the previous supercomputer, Pratyush, took about 10 hours to run weather models. With Arka, that time has decreased to just four hours.

The BFS relies on data from 40 Doppler Weather Radars positioned across the country. This system will enhance the accuracy of short-term forecasts, called nowcasts, which predict weather for the next two hours. In the future, the number of Doppler radars is expected to grow to 100, further improving the forecasting capabilities.

Recent studies show that localized forecasts are increasingly essential. According to a survey by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), communities that use localized weather forecasts are better prepared for severe weather events. This means the BFS could significantly impact disaster preparedness and response in India.

With technology evolving so rapidly, staying informed about weather patterns is more critical than ever. The BFS is a significant step toward making accurate and timely weather information accessible to everyone.
