India Secures Major Defense Milestone with Order of 300+ ATAGS: What This Means for National Security

India recently made headlines by signing its biggest domestic defense deal to date. The contract, valued at $805 million, includes an order for 307 self-propelled 155 mm Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) for the Indian Army, which was announced by the Ministry of Defence.

This historic agreement involves two Indian companies: Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems. Bharat Forge will supply 184 guns, while Tata will deliver 123 units. Along with the artillery systems, the deal also covers 327 6×6 tractors necessary for their operation.

Replacing older artillery systems is a crucial part of this deal. Many outdated models, like the Soviet-era 130 mm M-46 guns, will be phased out, making way for more modern and effective technology. The new ATAGS will significantly enhance the capabilities of about a dozen artillery regiments.

A notable aspect of this contract is that over 65% of the ATAGS components will be sourced locally. This includes vital parts like barrels and ammunition handling systems, contributing to India’s push for self-reliance in defense production.

What Makes ATAGS Stand Out?

The ATAGS isn’t just another artillery system. It was developed in 2019 by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), along with Bharat Forge and Tata. This advanced howitzer boasts a 52-caliber barrel and weighs around 18 tons. Its compact design allows for a mobility speed of up to 12 km/h.

Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the ATAGS features a fire control system that includes digital command capabilities and GPS targeting. This means troops can act quickly and accurately, enhancing battlefield efficiency.

With a maximum firing range of 45 km using standard shells, and even farther with rocket-assisted projectiles, the ATAGS offers a marked improvement over its predecessors. This range and firepower are vital for modern military engagements.
