To address potential supply risks, India has been diversifying its energy sources. In recent years, the country has reduced its reliance on oil from the Strait of Hormuz. Now, about 70% of crude imports come from other regions, up from 60%.
Even as geopolitical uncertainties loom, the government has assured that petrol and diesel prices will not rise right now. They have also worked to ease the burden on consumers by reducing excise duties on fuel in the past.
India’s energy reserves are reportedly improving despite the ongoing tensions. Officials express confidence in their strengthening energy stock position. To bolster supply security, India may consider importing LNG from other sources, including possibly from Russia, if offers are favorable.
Concerns have also been raised about liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices. However, government officials clarified that price stability assurances only pertained to petrol and diesel, dismissing rumors about rising LPG costs. They acknowledged past worries over LPG stock levels but noted that conditions have improved.
In recent changes, domestic LPG cylinder prices saw a slight increase, but they remain below market levels. The government has been absorbing some of the costs to protect consumers, with support from the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana still in place.
