India is urging Russia to release 27 Indian nationals believed to be serving in the Russian military. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, shared this news during a media briefing. He mentioned that families of these individuals have provided updated information about their involvement.
Jaiswal emphasized the dangers of these offers, advising all Indian citizens to avoid joining the Russian military. He stated, “These choices pose serious risks to life.” The Indian government is actively communicating with Russian officials to secure the safe release of these nationals.
Reports suggest that some Indians on student or business visas were pressured to join military units involved in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Over the years, India has consistently raised concerns about this issue, calling for the release of all Indian workers associated with the Russian military, including support roles like cooks.
Historically, this isn’t the first time the matter has been highlighted. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed this issue during his visit to Russia last year. Current estimates indicate that more than 150 Indians have been recruited by Russian forces.
Tragically, at least 12 Indians have lost their lives while fighting, and several others are unaccounted for. According to statistics, 96 have been discharged from service, with 16 currently listed as missing.
