India vs England 5th Test: Major Setback for Visitors as Chris Woakes Is Ruled Out

Hyderabad: England’s cricket team has hit a rough patch. All-rounder Chris Woakes is out of the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy due to a shoulder injury. He hurt himself while diving to save a run on the first day of the match. After feeling pain, he had to leave the field, and sadly, he won’t return.

The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed the news, stating, “At this stage, the injury has ruled him out of any further participation in the Test. A further assessment will take place at the end of the series.”

Woakes was injured while trying to stop a shot from Karun Nair. Now, England will continue the match with 10 players. The team relies on bowlers Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, and Josh Tongue to secure the last four wickets as India currently sits at 204/6. Both Atkinson and Tongue have picked up two wickets each, making an impact early on.

Exceptional Performance by Shubman Gill

Amid the challenges for England, Indian skipper Shubman Gill made headlines. He shattered a record that stood for 59 years—previously held by Sir Gary Sobers of West Indies. Sobers had scored 722 runs in a Test series in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). Gill surpassed this mark, becoming the leading run-scorer for an overseas captain in such series.

But that’s not all. He also broke another record for Indian captains, overtaking Sunil Gavaskar’s tally of 732 runs from the 1978-79 series against the West Indies. Both achievements highlight Gill’s emerging prowess in cricket.

According to a recent report from the International Cricket Council, the format of Test cricket is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, especially among younger audiences. More fans are tuning in, drawn by thrilling performances like Gill’s and the ever-evolving dynamics of teams like England faced with injuries and setbacks.

As the match progresses, all eyes will be on how England adapts without Woakes and whether India can capitalize on their lead. The tension on the field reflects a broader narrative of resilience in sports, reminding us just how unpredictable cricket can be.
