CANNES, France — Indian-American filmmakers Hemant M. Pandya and Nita Pednekar had an exciting experience at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. They attended as official delegates representing independent cinema and took part in numerous events designed to foster global artistic connections.
“This year’s festival felt different,” Pandya noted. “It’s more about storytelling and less about the glamour.” He explained that the real magic at Cannes comes from the films and the conversations with other filmmakers.
The festival showcased a variety of films from diverse cultures. Pandya and Pednekar were especially inspired by the strong representation of independent cinema. They highlighted noteworthy films like Elephants in the Fog, from Nepal, and India’s Shadows of the Moonless Nights (Parchave Masseah Rataan De), emphasizing that genuine storytelling can make an impact regardless of budget.
At the Bharat Pavilion, a dedicated space for Indian filmmakers, they engaged in discussions about co-productions and the future of cinema. Such dialogue is increasingly relevant; according to a recent report by the International Confederation of Art Cinemas, independent films are thriving despite challenges, with a 25% increase in viewership since 2021.
During the festival, they also introduced two projects in development through Friday Films LLC. The first, Love, Loathe & Life, deals with the sensitive themes of identity and healing following a real-life hate crime. The second, She Was…//?, is a psychological thriller that explores guilt and the emotional fallout from road rage.
“Cannes reminded us that there’s still hope for filmmakers committed to meaningful stories,” Pednekar said. “Honest cinema finds its audience.” This belief in the power of storytelling keeps them motivated as they continue to create culturally rich films.
As they look forward, Pandya and Pednekar aim to promote meaningful cinema through their work and the New Jersey Indian & International Film Festival, contributing to a vibrant global film community.
