Indian Army Boosts Airspace Security with Indigenous SAKSHAM Counter Drone System – Discover the Latest Advancements!

In a notable step towards greater defense independence, the Indian Army is set to implement the indigenous ‘SAKSHAM’ Counter Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Grid. Developed with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Ghaziabad, SAKSHAM aims to enhance India’s ability to detect and neutralize enemy drones in real-time.

SAKSHAM, which stands for Situational Awareness for Kinetic Soft and Hard Kill Assets Management, can track and identify drones up to 3,000 meters above ground. This initiative ties back to lessons from Operation Sindoor, where the need for better airspace control became clear after experiencing increasing drone incursions.

A senior defense officer noted, “Control of the Air Littoral—the space just above ground forces—is vital for success in modern warfare.” This signals a shift in how battles are fought, emphasizing that land operations are no longer the only focus.

The system features advanced tech, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), which helps synthesize data from various sources like radar and surveillance systems. This technology not only improves threat assessment but also speeds up decision-making, enabling quicker response to aerial threats. The Indian Army aims to roll out SAKSHAM within a year, as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative promoting self-reliance in defense production.

This development highlights a growing trend in defense technology worldwide. For instance, a recent report revealed that global investments in drone defense systems are projected to reach $9.6 billion by 2026, up from $5 billion in 2021. Countries are increasingly prioritizing measures to secure airspace from potential threats, which adds context to India’s efforts with SAKSHAM.

With this system, India is not just investing in drone defense; it’s building a comprehensive framework for battlefield control. It aims to integrate with existing air defense networks, amplifying commanders’ situational awareness, especially in sensitive border areas.

As the Indian military embarks on its ‘Decade of Transformation (2023-2032)’, tactics are evolving. One officer involved in the project put it succinctly: “SAKSHAM positions India to meet future challenges head-on, ensuring we’re ready for any scenario.”

With ongoing advancements, SAKSHAM is set to play a crucial role in shaping India’s defense capabilities in a rapidly changing global landscape.
