Indian Army Enhances Minefield Breaching with ₹975 Crore T-72/T-90 TRAWL System Contract

New Delhi: The Indian Ministry of Defence is making strides towards self-reliance. Recently, it signed contracts worth ₹975 crore for advanced TRAWL Assembly systems for T-72 and T-90 tanks. This move is a significant step to enhance the Indian Army’s ability to breach minefields effectively.

The contracts were finalized on April 21, 2026, with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in attendance. The TRAWL Assembly, designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), aims to improve the Army’s efficiency in navigating through minefields.

Key Features of the TRAWL Assembly

This system offers several crucial advantages:

  • It creates safe passageways for vehicles through minefields.
  • It neutralizes anti-tank mines using proximity magnetic fuses.
  • It enhances mobility and operational speed on the battlefield.

The integration of this system with T-72 and T-90 tanks will boost their effectiveness in combat.

Who’s Behind the Production?

Two companies are involved in this project:

  • Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML)
  • Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Pvt Ltd

These firms will produce the systems under the Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) initiative. This approach bolsters local defense manufacturing and reduces reliance on imports.

A Commitment to Self-Reliance

The Ministry of Defence views this project as a milestone in the modernization of India’s defense sector. The initiative aims to:

  • Decrease import dependence.
  • Rally support for local defense manufacturers.
  • Encourage small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to engage in component production.
  • Create both direct and indirect job opportunities.

Recent Defence Contracts

This contract is part of a series of deals intended to enhance India’s military strength. Just weeks prior, contracts worth ₹5,083 crore and ₹2,901 crore were signed for naval helicopters and missile systems. In February, there was a ₹2,312 crore contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for Dornier 228 aircraft. Collectively, these agreements demonstrate India’s commitment to a modern and self-sufficient defense system.

The Impact on the Indian Army

Officials believe the TRAWL system will bolster the Indian Army’s engineering capabilities. It is expected to facilitate quicker and safer maneuvers in combat, enhancing operational effectiveness in high-pressure situations.

The ₹975 crore investment in the TRAWL Assembly reflects India’s dedication to advancing indigenous defense technology. By focusing on tank mobility and minefield breaching, India continues to build a robust and self-reliant defense ecosystem.
