Indian Army Enhances UN Peacekeeping in South Sudan with High-Mobility Sherp ATVs

The Indian Army is gearing up to deploy Sherp All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) for peacekeeping missions in South Sudan. This step not only boosts mobility in a challenging environment but also highlights India’s growing capabilities in defense manufacturing.

The announcement came via X (formerly Twitter), where the Army expressed that these ATVs will greatly improve movement in extreme terrains, crucial for peacekeeping operations with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Sherp ATVs are designed for tough conditions. They can navigate through swamps, flooded areas, and rugged landscapes that often hinder traditional vehicles. Equipped with large, inflatable tires and a low ground pressure design, Sherps can float on water and easily overcome obstacles. This adaptability will be vital for the Indian peacekeepers ensuring they can operate effectively in flood-prone regions.

The Indian Army emphasizes that these vehicles are not just a tactical asset. They underscore India’s commitment to its Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which focuses on self-reliance in defense technology. India has been a significant player in UN peacekeeping, with over 2,400 troops currently serving in South Sudan. The introduction of the Sherp ATVs is expected to enhance logistics, speed up troop movements, and improve overall mission effectiveness.

Historically, India’s role in UNMISS dates back to its establishment in July 2011, shortly after South Sudan’s independence. Under UN Security Council Resolution 1996, UNMISS aims to stabilize this post-conflict nation. Led by Indian Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian, the mission not only benefits from India’s troop contributions but also its leadership.

The deployment of Sherp ATVs aligns perfectly with contemporary military needs. According to recent reports, mobility is a critical factor in peacekeeping success, especially in volatile areas like South Sudan.
