On April 28, the Indian Ministry of Defence released a request for proposals (RfP) to buy 83 Carrier Air Defence Tracked (CADET) systems for the Indian Army. This decision follows the Defence Acquisition Council’s approval in March 2026, highlighting the army’s need for a versatile platform that can perform in various terrains.
The RfP aims to outline the Army’s requirements for the CADET system, built on insights from a prior information request in August 2024. Under the RfP, the Ministry of Defence will include the Akashteer air defence control and reporting (AD C&R) system, already proven in combat during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. Currently, Akashteer is mounted on trucks, which limits its mobility in tough terrains.
The new CADET system is designed to enhance operational flexibility. It will provide real-time surveillance and targeting to air defence systems, whether domestically made or foreign. This is vital for effective coordination within mechanized formations operating in diverse environments, from plains to high altitudes of 15,000 feet.
One expert, Dr. Anil Kumar, a defense technology analyst, states, “The mobility of such systems is crucial, especially in challenging terrains across India. This adaptation reflects a broader trend in modern militaries towards flexibility and rapid deployment.”
The CADET system’s modular design allows for various sensors and weapons, making it adaptable for future requirements, including counter-drone tech. Importantly, 65% of the parts will be sourced locally, fostering domestic production and innovation in defense technology.
Deliveries are expected to start within 36 months after payment. The procurement will follow a competitive bidding process, where the lowest and second-lowest bids will split the order—50 systems for the lowest bidder and 33 for the second. If the second bidder cannot fulfill the order, the first bidder will deliver all 83 systems.
Overall, the introduction of the CADET system marks a significant step in strengthening India’s air defense capabilities—a response well aligned with current military needs and technological advancements.
