The new personal weapons being developed for the Indian Army are designed for various terrains, including plains, deserts, and high altitudes. These pistols will enhance the troops’ capability in diverse environmental conditions.
A significant aspect of this initiative involves starting licensed production of these pistols and their accessories, contingent on acquiring the necessary technology transfers. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army have crafted a 9mm weapon specifically for counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism missions. This weapon boasts innovative features like 3D-printed parts and a high firing rate.
According to recent requirements, the 9mm pistol must operate effectively in all weather conditions, day or night, and endure extreme temperatures from -30 to 55 degrees Celsius. The design is also modular, meaning it can be upgraded easily in the future without major alterations.
This development comes after the Indian Army’s acquisition of light machine guns (LMGs) and carbines, reported earlier. Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) recently confirmed the delivery of the first batch of 40,000 LMGs, part of a contract signed last year. Additionally, IWI is on the verge of finalizing another contract for nearly 170,000 new-age Close Quarter Battle (CQB) carbines. These are part of a broader requirement from the Ministry of Defence for 425,000 carbines under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category. Bharat Forge is the main bidder, while PLR Systems, a subsidiary of the Adani Group, will supply a significant portion of the carbines in partnership with IWI.
This ongoing modernization reflects a trend in military upgrades worldwide, where innovative technologies are increasingly integrated into defense systems. By drawing on expert opinions and data from military studies, the effectiveness of such advancements in improving troop safety and effectiveness becomes clear.
