Indian Astronaut Set to Land on the Moon by 2040: A Bold Step Towards Viksit Bharat, Says Jitendra Singh

An Indian astronaut is set to make history by landing on the moon in 2040, according to Union Minister Jitendra Singh. He made this announcement during a recent Lok Sabha discussion about astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s upcoming space journey.

Singh highlighted how Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted significant reforms in India’s space sector when he took office in 2014. Since the government opened the doors to private companies in 2020, India’s space economy has already grown to around $8 billion. Experts estimate that it could soar to $45 billion by the end of the next decade.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has ambitious plans ahead. In 2026, they will launch an uncrewed mission featuring a robot named ‘Vyommitra’. This will be immediately followed by the Gaganyaan mission in 2027, which will mark India’s first human spaceflight.

Singh emphasized a vibrant vision for India’s future. He said, “In 2035, we will establish the Bharat Antariksh Station, and by 2040, an Indian astronaut will walk on the moon.” This journey isn’t just about space; it symbolizes India’s aspiration for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ or ‘Developed India’ by 2047.

The announcement sparked lively discussions in the Lok Sabha, although proceedings were eventually interrupted due to protests from the opposition.
