The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has recently partnered with L&T Precision Engineering & Systems to acquire six Rail-Less Helicopter Traversing Systems (RLHTS). This deal marks a significant move toward boosting India’s domestic defense production.
The agreement was signed at Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi, aligning with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims for self-reliance in defense. The deal was formalized in a ceremony attended by top officials from both the ICG and L&T.
The RLHTS enhances safety and efficiency for ship-borne helicopter operations, especially in challenging maritime conditions. Unlike traditional rail systems, this innovative design allows helicopters to move from the flight deck to the hangar without needing fixed rails. It utilizes winches, cables, and advanced sensors to securely position the aircraft, offering greater flexibility to operate even in rough seas.
This new system is capable of handling helicopters weighing up to 12.5 tonnes, making it versatile for various maritime aviation platforms deployed by the Coast Guard.
The introduction of RLHTS is expected to bolster the aviation capabilities of the ICG’s next-generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs). This initiative reflects India’s commitment to developing indigenous technologies crucial for defense.
Recent trends show a growing emphasis on homegrown military solutions. According to a survey by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), more than 70% of Indian defense projects now focus on domestic innovation. This reflects a shift from reliance on foreign defense imports to fostering local expertise and manufacturing.
As India strengthens its defense capabilities, the collaboration between the Coast Guard and L&T can be seen as a step toward ensuring maritime security and operational readiness.
