Indian Coast Guard Ship Arrives in Tanzania: Strengthening India’s SAGAR Vision for Regional Cooperation

The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sachet, a locally built Offshore Patrol Vessel, recently docked in Zanzibar, Tanzania. This visit marks a significant step in India’s naval efforts in Africa.

During its time in Zanzibar, ICGS Sachet will work with the Tanzanian People’s Defence Force and local maritime agencies. They will focus on enhancing cooperation in areas like Maritime Search and Rescue and Marine Pollution Response. These activities aim to build skills, share knowledge, and explore future partnerships between the two countries.

One exciting aspect of this visit is India’s emphasis on local shipbuilding. It aligns with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, showcasing India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

In addition to naval discussions, the crew will engage in community outreach. They are set to participate in a Walkathon and a Beach Clean-up Drive, part of the “Puneet Sagar Abhiyan” campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness about marine pollution and involve local youth in protecting their environment.

To promote cultural ties, ICGS Sachet held a joint yoga session, fostering wellness and forging bonds between the Indian and Tanzanian communities. They also plan a Community Support Programme with local organizations to assist in outreach and welfare activities. The ship will welcome visitors, including members of the Tanzanian Defence Forces and local students, providing guided tours to demonstrate its capabilities and technology.
