New Delhi: India and the US are set to discuss an important trade agreement in Washington from April 20. This three-day meeting comes after changes to US tariffs, requiring a fresh look at the deal first finalized in February.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal explained that ongoing discussions are crucial. The Indian delegation will be led by Darpan Jain, the chief negotiator. This is their first in-person meeting in about three to four months. They aim to finalize the legal aspects of the agreement based on a statement made in February.
One key issue will be two investigations initiated by the US last month, looking into trade practices of several countries, including India. These talks are an opportunity to address these matters collaboratively and establish clear timelines for next steps.
Originally, the trade deal would have reduced tariffs on Indian goods to 18%. However, a Supreme Court ruling in the US changed the tariff landscape significantly. Previously, Indian goods faced 25% tariffs due to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Now, there’s a flat 10% tariff on imports from all nations, complicating the negotiations.
Given these changes, the agreement needs to be reevaluated. India’s negotiating advantage compared to competitors has diminished, as now all US trading partners are similarly affected by the new tariffs.
A government source has noted that since the agreement remains unsigned, India can adjust its terms as necessary. All countries are reconsidering how their agreements with the US should be structured amid these shifting dynamics.
In March, the US Trade Representative (USTR) launched a probe targeting several countries, including India and China. This investigation aims to review policies related to forced labor practices. India has already submitted its responses to these inquiries.
As negotiations continue, India’s focus is on gaining favorable terms under the new circumstances. “We want to know what commitments we can secure for a competitive edge in the US market,” the source said.
