Chennai: The Indian Embassy in Indonesia is helping three men from Tamil Nadu who are facing the death penalty for allegedly smuggling drugs. They are accused of trafficking 106 kg of methamphetamine on a ship called the Legend Aquarius.
According to officials, the Indonesian authorities stopped the ship in the Bongar Sea while it was traveling from Singapore to Australia in 2024. They acted on a tip-off and found the drugs hidden on board.
The ship had ten crew members, including an Indonesian captain. Among them were Raji Muthukumaran and Govindaswamy Vimalakanthan from Cuddalore, and Selvadurai Dinakaran from Nagapattinam. The three men claimed they were on a tourist trip, but the authorities arrested them for drug smuggling. Under Indonesian law, this crime can lead to the death penalty.
The case is now in the Kerimun Court. Legal experts, including Solomon Ponto and Indian lawyer M. John Paul, argued that the men were falsely accused. They pointed out that smuggling such a large amount of drugs would likely require the captain’s knowledge. The court has scheduled an appearance for the captain on March 11.
In the meantime, the Indian Embassy has reached out to the families of the accused to provide legal support. This assistance has brought some hope to the men and their loved ones as they await the next steps in their case.
