The Ministry of Defence is about to finalize an important order for 500 Invar anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) from Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL). These missiles will strengthen India’s armored warfare capabilities, particularly for T-90 tanks.
An official mentioned, “Invar missiles are specifically designed to be launched from tank platforms. The Defence Ministry is moving ahead with an order worth between Rs 2,000 crore and Rs 3,000 crore.”
These missiles are known for their accurate strike capabilities and are already in use on frontline T-90 tanks. Currently, the exact value of the deal is under financial review, which will decide the necessary level of approval. Orders up to Rs 2,000 crore can be approved by the Defence Minister, while those closer to Rs 3,000 crore require the Finance Minister’s approval. Anything above that will need Cabinet consent.
This procurement is part of a larger push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing under the Make in India initiative. BDL has a strong track record and reports an order book worth Rs 3,110 crore, anticipating a revenue increase of 28–30% by FY25.
Interestingly, this announcement follows Operation Sindoor, a military strike targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan after a tragic attack in Pahalgam.
According to recent reports from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India ranks among the top five countries in military expenditure. In 2022, the nation spent over $76 billion on defense, highlighting its ongoing commitment to modernizing its military forces.
Overall, the focus on indigenous defense production reflects a growing trend in many countries to enhance self-sufficiency in defense capabilities. With the rise of technology, nations are increasingly turning to home-grown solutions to meet their security needs while reducing dependence on foreign imports.
